Canada's Food Price Report was published this week, providing predictions on annual food expenditures. The report forecasts that overall food expenditures will go up by 5-7% about $1,065.60 for an average family. VCC's Meaghon Reid discussed the cost of food with the Calgary Herald and the impacts it's having on Calgarians, explaining that people compromising on certain foods to make ends-meet, may face learning challenges at school, reduced productivity at work and feeling despair. Meaghon explained solutions should be focused on improved income support for families facing poverty and addressing the lack of affordable housing in Calgary since food insecurity in Canada is generally connected to higher living costs.

“We need immediate income-geared solutions so that people can eat today, and not two years from now,” she said.
