Lower-income Calgary students facing additional barriers in recovering from pandemic learning gaps

VCC discusses how there isn't enough research to track how well kids are doing

The pandemic has caused gaps for some students particular those living in lower income families and newcomers according to experts interviewed in this CityNews segment. VCC's Lee Stevens weighed in on the information gaps and how a significant number of pre-school students may have gaps when they enter kindergarten. She expresses optimism that the federal-provincial childcare agreement will lead to better preparation for students entering the school system.

Quality care environments can contribute to children’s growth and development, which in turn helps prevent intergenerational poverty. Easy access to care also helps increase families’ capacity for gainful employment. Calgarians deserve improved access to affordable, quality child care options that cater to the diversity of the city.
