Celebrating Indigenous history and culture

Gain knowledge, make connections, take action

12 June 2024

June is National Indigenous History Month and June 17 – 21 is Aboriginal Awareness Week Calgary. It’s a month filled with activities and community connections that can expand your knowledge and help you take actionable steps in truth and reconciliation.

One action you can take is to learn more about the Indigenous Gathering Place (IGP). The IGP is a grassroots initiative shaped by the wisdom of Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and the needs of the urban Indigenous community. The IGP will serve as a sanctuary for healing and reconciliation, bringing together Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities to learn and grow together. A tangible step towards truth and reconciliation is supporting the creation of a building. Why do you think we need an IGP? Is it because Calgary needs a space of belonging? Is it vital to have an establishment that preserves and shares Indigenous culture? Do we need a dedicated building for Indigenous spiritual and cultural practices? Share your thoughts on social media about why creating an IGP is important to you.
