City council voted to increase taxi fares this week. This is one of many cost of living increases those living on low incomes are facing. However, VCC's Meaghon Reid said the issue is complex in a recent Calgary Herald article, noting that taxi drivers make on average about $41,000 a year. "We want to make sure that people in the taxi industry are able to make a wage that's above the poverty line... hopefully at a living wage," she explained.
Small increases can have big impacts for people within the disability community, seniors and those who don’t have access to a credit card who really rely on taxis.
