Calgary, AB, August 30, 2017 – Vibrant Communities Calgary and Basic Income Calgary will be hosting a Community Conversation about basic income through the lens of food insecurity on Wednesday, September 6, 2017, from 6:30 – 9:00 p.m. at the Alexandra Centre Society (922 – 9 Ave S.E. Calgary).
Keynote speaker Dr. Lynn McIntyre will discuss a series of policy studies that support a basic income guarantee as a promising solution to food insecurity in Canada. The keynote address will be followed by a panel discussion with Dr. McIntyre, James McAra, CEO of the Calgary Food Bank and co-chair of the Enough for All Food Dignity Constellation, Mary Salvani, a member of Disability Action Hall and a long-time community advocate, as well as Carole Carpot- Lacassagne from the Women’s Centre.
“The fact that children and families in our community go hungry and worry about how they will have food is shameful. A Basic Income guarantee can be a solution,” says Yvonne Stanford, Co-Chair of Basic Income Calgary.
“We support systems change efforts that can have the greatest impact on poverty in our city; it’s why we are working closely with Basic Income Calgary to advance the concept of principles-based basic income guarantee in Alberta,’ says Franco Savoia, Executive Director of Vibrant Communities Calgary. “Basic income offers one of the most promising ways to reduce poverty in Calgary and enable all Calgarians to contribute to community life.”
