New affordability payments

Meaghon Reid discusses Alberta's new affordability measures and other opportunities

9 January 2023

VCC's Meaghon Reid sat down with Rob Brown on CBC News Calgary to discuss Alberta's new affordability measures. She acknowledges the measures are important and coming at a good time, but they miss the segment most impacted by deep poverty - single people. She suggests that now is the time to consider systems-level change, so that we're not always reacting to emergency situations and continually servicing poverty, which costs the government as much as $8 billion annually. The interview begins at 3:20.

VCC also weighed in on affordability measures with Global News Hour at 6. Meaghon Reid said support payments are overall a good thing, but she has concerns about the application process potentially causing problems for people.

“These one-time payments are good in the short term of course, however they don’t go very far in terms of addressing the mountain of bills that Albertans continue to be having right now.” said Meaghon.
