UCP's cash payouts to Albertans is 'ideal way' to weather inflation: economist

VCC's Meaghon Reid discusses the provincial government announcement with the Calgary Herald and how single people are excluded from the help

The provincial government announced some much needed inflation relief for Albertans on November 23. Premier Danielle Smith has pledged new funding to lower income families and those receiving income supports and an extension to the rebate program for electricity and natural gas along with a number of other affordability measures.

VCC's Meaghon Reid discussed the measures with the Calgary Herald, saying that while they will help a lot of vulnerable Albertans, “poverty for single people is really on the rise and it’s often said it is because they don’t have the same supports to pull on that people with families who are in poverty often have.”

The number of single people living in poverty is rising

Poverty reduction efforts have not typically been targeted at single people, which may be reflected in the numbers. The proportion of single Calgarians experiencing poverty is on the rise, and the depth of poverty they experience is greater - and increasing.
