Alberta's Progress in Poverty Reduction

Arguably the most significant recommendation that was implemented was the introduction of a provincial child benefit. In 2015, the Government of Alberta introduced the Alberta Child Benefit. The benefit resulted in $175 million going to 127,345 families with household incomes of less than $41,200. Combined with the Government of Canada’s changes to the national child benefit, Alberta's child poverty rate was reduced by 50 percent between 2015 and 2017. Between 2015 and 2020, Alberta's child poverty rate was reduced by 30 percent.
