This report is the second in a series of four on Alberta’s income support landscape. Where the first report highlighted opportunities for alignment across programs (i.e., Alberta Disability Assistance Program, Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped, and Alberta Income Support), this report offers suggestions to improve Alberta Income Support exclusively.
Briefly, in Alberta, people without a permanent and severe disability who require financial assistance are eligible for Alberta Income Support, which provides income for basic needs. However, concerns have emerged that, in its current form, the program does not enable recipients to meet their basic needs. In response, VCC reviewed the program to identify opportunities for improvement. This report focuses specifically on the adequacy of benefits, access to and eligibility for the program, and successful transitions from the program and into employment.
