Refreshed poverty reduction strategy for Calgary
Over the past five years, there have been significant changes in the social and economic landscape in our community. For example, citizens have experienced the effects of a significant fall in the price of oil, an increase in unemployment rates, and a persistent downturn in the economy. At the same time, progress has been made by community organizations, as well as all orders of government, including introducing the Alberta Child Benefit, increasing and indexing income support programs to the cost of living, six new community hubs, and a national poverty reduction strategy, to name a few. Yet, poverty is the day-to-day reality of more than 120,000 Calgarians.
